For Every Three Things, Do One.

With the hustle and bustle and the ragged-run chaos of daily life, it’s easy to forget a few things. I forget about my dry cleaning, I forget about the oil change I need to get, and I often forget to be kind, and to take care of myself. In retrospect, I realize now that I can’t really do either of those last two things if one of them is missing.

Part of my quest to be bold in 2014 means getting specific about how I’m going to do it, and spending some time noticing what’s working, and what’s not. My toughest realization? I’m spiritually dry. There’s nothing on my list of daily and weekly tasks feeding my soul.

This just won’t do. So, for every three things I have on my ‘to-do’ list, I try to jot down one thing on my ‘for me’ list. And as I tick tasks off the ‘must-get-done’ roster, I treat myself to little indulgences from the ‘I can’t wait for this’ list, even if it’s only for a second. Maybe it’s a cup of tea. Maybe it’s a favorite song. Maybe it’s a sputtered squeeze of my lavender lotion, or a quick walk outside. Whatever you decide to do after taking care of your tasks, do it for yourself.

Spend a week trying to approach self-care more boldly. I am, and I’m already noticing a difference. Life is tough enough with our own added bull shit.

“Be gentle with yourself. Learn to love yourself, to forgive yourself. For only as we have the right attitude toward ourselves can we have the right attitude toward others.”

Yes! We all need to give ourselves a little TLC every now and then. I just came to your blog via HelloGiggles (loved your essay about saying “yes” – the exact kind of advice and attitude I need right now) and am looking forward to reading more in the future!
